installing a chair lift?

i live in an upstairs condo unit–moving is not an option–but at times i have trouble on the stairs.

if i can ever afford it–I would like to put in one of those chairs that glide up the stairs…

a friend told me the fire marshall would never allow it–because the stairwell isn’t wide enough–i would get the kind where the chair folds up…the stairwell is 3 ft wide–it is my private stairwell–not a common area…

would i be prohibited from installing it?
it can be stored on the landing..many of the pics I’ve seen online show a stair well no wider than 3 foot
I don’t have a landlord=its a condo

and teh ADA is crap–the govt refuses to enforce it–and i can’t afford a lawyer
even if i did have a landlord–it would not be a reasonable accommodation to have him make modification to teh stairs–at most it would require him to give me preference to a 1st floor unit–and it would be FHA–not ADA–ADA doesn’t apply to housing
ITS A CONDO–not an APARTMENT–i would not need to remove it unless it was a condition of the sale between me and the buyer……

and the question is about the size of the stairs-being allowed by the FD and PD–not by accessibility/non discrimination laws

Doesn’t matter of it is a private stairwell. Fire and police have to have access. Unless it can fold around a corner your stairs are too narrow.

3feet wide does sound pretty narrow. Also they cost a fortune

don’t know where you are at or the local zoning laws. contact your local authorities. trust no ones opinion on this board. we will not have to remove it and cover your fines if we are wrong.

there are ALWAYS options for us!! based on the ADA, your landlord can provide you options for the stairwell.
