Such stairlifts are usually not installed in smaller residences, but in malls, office buildings etc. where a large number of physically challenged or elderly persons can be wheeled onto the platform. Naturally such installations are heavy duty and require high voltage power sources as opposed to stair chair lifts. They may also be installed in private residences where the degree of movement debilitation is high enough to justify it.

However for both the above cases it is needed that the person retains enough strength so as to press a button to move the lift. If even this is not achievable then stairlifts may not be the answer.
