We all know what a stair chair lift is so I won’t bore you with some innocuous details about how they operate. Rather, I would like to recount a story about my grandmother who was suffering from mobility issues and how we had struggled between our love and loyalty with the obvious monetary considerations about purchasing the stair chair.

My grandmother was born in the early 1900’s in a small town in Italy. At an early age she became stricken with polio , which left her with a severe limp. As she grew older the limp had become increasingly worse, getting to the point where she could no longer make her way up the stairs very easily. She was living in an old brownstone in Brooklyn, New York and if you have ever been in one of these homes you know how steep and narrow the steps can be. She was a tough Italian woman that refused to admit she couldn’t do something but this was becoming too much to overcome.

We had a difficult decision to make about her future and what would be best for her. A nursing home was out of the question and moving was also not an option. The church she attended everyday was right next door and being a devotedly religious person she couldn’t bear the thought of not being able to go to church everyday. We made the decision to have a stair chair lift installed so she could remain in the place that made her the happiest.

Dyslexics don’t necessarily have problems copying letters, only naming them correctly.
More boys than girls have dyslexia. The dyslexia fact here is that while boys are more often diagnosed with dyslexia, the disability occurs equally in girls.
Dyslexia can be outgrown, or there is no treatment. The truth is that studies show that the disability persists into adulthood in children who have dyslexia. While many of them do go on to read accurately, it is not automatic for them and they continue to read slowly. There are also many treatments or more appropriately many ways to teach or train dyslexics to help them overcome their disability. Phonological training is one example and children who receive this training as early as 5 or 6 can have significantly fewer problems in later years.

As you can see, many of the things you may have thought were dyslexia facts have been disproved. There is still a lot to learn about this disability. For example it is thought that it is an inherited condition, but there is also evidence that it can be caused by head trauma.

Until quite recently disabled people were socially isolated. Whether their condition was physical,

emotional or mental, all met the same attitudes. Whether one carried a stick, or were in a wheelchair all were looked upon as being perhaps somewhat limited mentally and were hardly likely to be invited to a social gathering.

However, thanks to the scientists, medico’s and dedicated educationists, social attitudes have changed somewhat, since hidden abilities of the disabled have been brought to the fore making their lives more comfortable.

However, as regards attitudes the present situation does not yet reach the hundred per cent mark. There always have and probably always will be some who cannot come to terms with the imperfect and disfunctional human body and will shy away or ignore them altogether. The reason for this lies with those people themselves.

Thus society and the disabled themselves must pull together to integrate and make the climate of acceptability aa

normal as possible. People are encouraged to use different terminology eg. A person who uses a wheelchair, carries a walking stick, walks with a frame may be called ‘physically challenged,’ while those with emotional or mental afflictions are ‘intellectually challenged.’
