Stairlifts – usage and purpose

Stairlifts are a type of machine that was created for the purpose of helping wheelchair bound people traverse stairs, or to lift people up. When the stairwell is of sufficient width then stair chair lifts are used that can move along rails which are laid parallel to the tread of the staircase. A seating arrangement or a wheelchair is then fixed to the rails. Based on the seating arrangement they can be classified into platform lifts or wheelchair lifts. Anyone who is sitting on the seat or wheelchair can be lifted or lowered with reasonable ease. Stair chair lifts for the disabled and/or stair lifts for the elderly are a major help, especially in households or situations that require an often painful traversal of staircases. In case of a chair being attached, the person can sit directly in the seat and be carried up or down.

For people in a wheelchair it becomes a problem to be transferred from one seat to another. In such a case the platform lifts are used, where the wheelchair itself is wheeled onto the platform which then moves. One is then no longer confined to move independently only on level surfaces which do not include moving up or down stairways. When faced with a staircase there is no longer any need to rely upon assistance being offered by another. Stairlifts first came into use in America during the ‘30s, when most people using it were suffering from polio and had lost the ability of normal locomotion.

Nowadays we can see stairlifts that are manufactured across a wide spectrum of choices, boasting many features like user-adjustable height of the seat, switches to isolate batteries, arrangement for call stations, variable modes for speeds, a gradual acceleration so that starting or stopping does not cause an uncomfortably jarring sensation and many other features.
